A short car drive of 15 minutes and you are able to feel the past hippie vibe of Matala. Rest on the beach and enjoy the view of the famous Venetian caves, later - while Joni Mitchell & others used to hang around in Matala - used as housing!
Want some relaxing beach time? Visit Kommos, a large and wide beach - uncommon for Greece’s beautiful bays. If you are more of a free-spirit, in limited areas you will also find nudism!
A hidden gem, available only by foot! When you visit Matala and you are craving just a little bit more privacy, follow the signs to Red Beach! There is no street. So, if you are interested, start a small hike over the hill towards east of Matala and you will end up at a beautiful Beach with only one small bar, famous for its Mojito. Cheers!
Connecting to Kommos Beach, another rather large and wide beach. If you like to have some variety, visit Kalamaki Beach!
Active and relaxing at once, a MUST when in the south of Heraklion district. Agiofarago - as the Greek term “faragi” says, refers to a gorge. Drive out to the very south coast, park your car and enjoy a pleasant walk through Agiofarago. The highlight: at the end you will reach to a bay with typical Greek turquoise water. A day trip for young and old!
Reminder: There is not much shadow at the beach. Make sure to be prepared (sunscreen and sunshade).
The Village - Sivas
Walk to the village’s center and enjoy a coffee in the morning with the welcoming local fellows. Explore the villages traditions, for instance on Easter! Make sure to visit a local restaurant for some real authentic Cretan food, for instance “Taverna Avli Kostas” including a lovely backyard and view!
Moni Odigitrias, a monastery with profound history. Visit one of the most persistent Christian community in Crete. The monks are famous for fighting off invading forces over centuries! Make sure to check opening hours previously, as the monastery is not available at all times.
The palace of Phaistos
Experience Ancient Greek history! Located just outside of the village “Agios Ioannis” you will find the ruins of the Palace of Phaistos. The “city of Phaistos” once formed the second largest Minoan palace in Crete after Knossos on an area of 8,400 square meters!
Would you like to visit a traditional fruit and vegetable market, explore the Greek farmer’s organic products and experience an authentic shopping day? Visit the local “Laiki” of the largest village in the nearby area named “Moires”. Only a 15-minutes car drive! Every Saturday morning till late noon (around 2pm). Make sure to have some “Meze” (Greek tapas) at the small tavernas on the street and drink some Raki. True local feelings!
