Magic Matala & the Red Beach

South Heraklion District

Hippie community meets Lonely Sailor

Matala is considered to be one of the most famous villages in Crete. Though it has been pretty crowded for the past years, its aura truly is one of a kind. If you have the chance to visit Matala in spring around March, you will be able to experience a magical spot with less tourists. Around June, July and August, especially during the famous Matala Festival dedicated to the previous Hippie community, you will find a rather crowded village. Nonetheless, when traveling to Crete a visit to Matala is a must!

Most tourist will stay at Matala beach. If you are interested in a more secluded beach, start a short hike to the left of Matala village over the rocks and end up at RED BEACH. Also, in the village you will find signs that will lead you to this spot. You will be able to explore Matala’s nature site and enjoy the most famous Mojito on the island at the one and only bar on the beach! Note: There is no street for you to take the car. The hike is a must!
